Face Fit Testing

Fit Testing is a mandatory requirement for all tight-fitting masks used in the workplace, regardless of the type.

This includes FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3 disposable, half and full face masks. It's important to note that a separate fit test is needed for each different make, model, and size of facepiece worn in the workplace.

Each mask must be fit tested by a competent person. This requirement is detailed in HSE CoSHH regulations.

The Qualitative Face Fit Test

Qualitative face fit testing is a pass/fail test based on the wearer’s subjective assessment of any leakage from the face seal region, by sensing the introduction of a test agent.

These tests are suitable for half masks. They are not suitable for full face masks.

You will need to know the type, make, model and size of each mask and filters worn in the workplace.

The method we provide is the qualitative test, based on bitter- or sweet-tasting aerosol.
The test will also help to identify unsuitable facepieces that should not be used. Remember that tight-fitted RPE will only provide effective protection if the wearer is clean shaved, so you should also be clean shaved when fit tested.

Why wearing the mask is vital:

Work activities may result in harmful substances contaminating the air in the

form of dust, mist, vapour, gas or fume. For example, when:

  • cutting a material such as stone or wood;

  • using a product containing volatile solvents;

  • handling a dusty powder;

  • welding stainless steel

  • working with asbestos

  • building sides

Workers may also need to work in areas where oxygen levels are or may become low, for example:

â–  confined spaces, such as a trench, silo or tank.

RPE is a particular type of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect the wearer from breathing in harmful substances or from oxygen-deficient atmospheres when other controls are either not possible or insufficient on their own.

RPE must be both adequate and suitable:

  • Adequate – It is right for the hazard and reduces exposure to the level required to protect the wearer’s health.

  • Suitable – It is right for the wearer, task and environment, such that the wearer can work freely and without additional risks due to the RPE.

Employers should make sure the selected RPE is of the right size and can correctly fit the wearer. For tight-fitting facepieces the initial selection should include a fit test
